A Message from the WBAI Justice & Unity Campaign

WBAI's future depends on you and your quick action.

With very little notice from this year’s national supervisor, elections for the Local Station Board are upon us. To vote, you must have contributed at least $25 or volunteered 3 hours since Oct. 2, 2017. Or you must do so by Oct. 1, 2018. Directions are at the end of this message.

Whatever your concerns – workers’ rights, human rights, tenants’ rights, LGBTQ rights, anti-racism, release of political prisoners, prison reform, ending mass incarceration, an economy that works for most of us, and/or any of the other crucial issues that WBAI covers – you have benefited from the existence of WBAI Radio.

While WBAI is no longer facing the threat from the Empire State Building owners, we, as Pacifica, are millions of dollars in debt, with shrunken memberships and contributions. There has been no transparency about the extent of the debt. We do know that the national office building was sold and all other real property was used as collateral for the more than $3 million dollar balloon payment loan. There is still no repayment plan beyond selling WBAI or taking underwriting. Selling the station is not acceptable and underwriting presents a slippery slope.

Please help build a board whose members will prioritize the principled growth of our station as ...

a beacon and which will address financial and management problems instead of jockeying for personal advantage.

The WBAI Justice & Unity Campaign (www.justiceunity.org) is assembling a slate of diverse, anti-racist, community-involved candidates to run for seats on the board. By becoming a member, you will have a say in who gets elected.

If your membership is current by October 1*, you can help choose the Local Station Board (LSB) that is empowered to create the candidate pools for General Manager and Program Director. The LSB also approves the station’s budget and sends representatives to the Pacifica National Board that holds the greatest authority in the Foundation.

Only those who have contributed at least $25 or volunteered 3 hours between October 2, 2017 and October 1, 2018*, will have voting rights.

You can become a member by contributing $25 no later than 11:59 pm ET on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018*: you can use a (debit or) credit card (Visa, MC, Amex, or Discover) or PayPal at http://www.give2wbai.org .  You may also call (516) 620-3602 at any time.

Each person of the household may establish or renew a membership by separately contributing $25. Couples who have jointly contributed least $50 are each entitled to an individual ballot.

If you wish to create or renew your membership by volunteering for WBAI, you can help on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, from 11am – 7pm at the Atlantic Antic in downtown Brooklyn. Sign up here: https://goo.gl/forms/dAf65YGBcE28mByJ2

* There are multiple problems with this date that has now been announced and put on all stations’ websites. (The original proposition was ridiculously Sept. 16. We think even more time is needed.) Its’ selection by the National Election Supervisor that goes beyond his authority and provides inadequate notice for listeners who struggle everyday, do not always have extra funds, and may have just faced school expenses from kindergarten to college. You can read more about the early issues around these elections at justiceunity.org

We worry that these problems will not be corrected by the PNB when it meets on Thursday, Sept. 20, so we urge you to join NOW, if possible. We will keep you informed about this process. You can also visit the official website: elections.pacifica.org

Please urgently share this message with friends and family.
