A Renewed WBAI - Vote for Justice & Unity PDF Print E-mail
Written by admin

After 15 months in control of the station by the opposition ACE, their true nature - arbitrary firings, bannings, and suspensions without process, censorship, slashed programming on local issues, and an increasingly commercial-like hawking of merchandise - is now clearer to many. This is not the WBAI you love or the WBAI we need.

Justice and Unity has detailed, realistic plans to restore the station's financial viability, raise funds for a permanent home, and return programming and worker relations to values that Pacifica is supposed to represent. To help us achieve these goals, please take these two steps:

1. Vote for the Local Station Board candidates committed to renewing a mission-consistent WBAI.
If you donated at least $25 or, did three hours or more of volunteer work between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010; or received one of the handful of hardship waivers, you are eligible to vote and should receive a ballot by September 1.

It is crucial that you mark your ballots in the ranked order recommended below (more details about candidates on attached flyer):

1. Bernard White
2. Suzanne Adely
3. John Brinkley
4. Father Lawrence Lucas
5. Ray Laforest
6. Wellington Echegaray
7. Sharonne Salaam
8. Linda Bergnes
9. Myriam Decime
10. Carlos Canales
11. Sarah Klepner
12. Henry Hagins
13. Eugene Hamond

More information on the candidates is available HERE
or you can call 212-591-2111 to ask that information be mailed to you. A sample ballot will be on this website soon.

Remember: Completed ballots must be RETURNED (not postmarked) by September 30.

TAKE BACK WBAI: Vote for Justice & Unity PDF Print E-mail
Written by admin

Since January 2009, WBAI has been under attack by the Pacifica National Board and WBAI Local Station Board majorities who have terminated or forced out 8 managers and senior staff – all of them Black or Latino – throughout the network. In May 2009, Pacifica summarily fired and banned WBAI’s Program Director Bernard White and removed General Manager Tony Riddle. Community-focused programming has been slashed. Respected thinkers such as Dr. Joy DeGruy (Leary) and Tim Wise are virtually banned. Meanwhile, although the stated reason for removing WBAI management was the station's large deficit, repeated claims of big revenue gains have proven false. The auditor’s report shows a $1.4 million drop in listener revenue between fiscal years 2008 and 2009. Dissenting on-air voices have been censored, suspended, removed, forced out, and in some cases barred without any process.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! In order to reverse these destructive changes, we must take back the Local Station Board majority for Justice and Unity.

With your help, the WBAI Justice and Unity Campaign, a diverse coalition of multi-skilled activist listeners and staff, can return the station to its rightful role as a listener-sponsored, truly independent media outlet that serves vital progressive communities across all race, class, gender, and color lines.

If you were a WBAI member between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010, look for your ballot in late August. Please vote for all the Justice and Unity candidates, in the recommended ranked order.

WBAI Local Board Listener Candidate Gets Away with 4 Hours of Unauthorized Air Time - Email the Election Supervisor PDF Print E-mail

In Pacificaland, are some candidates more "equal" than others?

The bylaws of the Pacifica Foundation explicitly state that during the season when members are vying for seats on its stations' governing boards – no listener candidate may be given greater airtime than any other candidate. As candidates and station staff can be penalized for infractions of this and other rules both groups are required to sign statements acknowledging their awareness of this rule. Candidates were required to submit these statements with other mandatory documents by the date nominations closed – July 19, 2010.

When WBAI listener candidate, Teresa Palmer, hosted a 2-hour fundraising program on August 3, during which she announced her candidacy, the National Election Supervisor was provided with the audio files and asked how she planned to provide the other 20-plus listener candidates with equal time or whether she would disqualify Palmer. The NES responded that under the 3-strikes rule, Palmer would be notified that her official on-time would be "reduced."

Support Lynne Stewart - Write Bureau of Prisons PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator 5

We urge everyone to support this letter-writing effort on behalf of Lynne Stewart, heroic human rights attorney (now disbarred) and unjustly sentenced to a 10-year sentence on trumped up charges. Lynne is also a member of WBAI's Local Station Board, elected last year on the Justice & Unity slate.

Note from Ralph Poynter, Lynne's life-partner and comrade: There will be much to do in support of Lynne Stewart in these next months. For the moment, the priority is to see that Lynne is sent to the Federal Corrections Institition for Women in Danbury rather than somewhere in Texas or even further from her family and friends. WRITE TO THE BUREAU OF PRISONS IMMEDIATELY! TURN YOUR PAIN AT LYNNE'S HORRIFIC SENTENCE INTO FIGHTING BACK. THIS IS STEP 1.

We urge you to write to the Bureau of Prisons (see address below) immediately and ask for Lynne to be transferred to the Federal Correctional Institute for female prisoners. Time is of the essence as the Bureau of Prisons is not bound to accept Judge Koeltl's recommendation that Lynne be kept at MCI for 60 days and then be transferred to Danbury. Lynne could be sent elsewhere at any point.
